The Remnancy of DJ Dizko

[THUD!]

Being woken up by the loud sound of lightning striking a transformer, Damian jumps up in a startle. “What the fuck was that?” he mutters to himself. “Jesus, that was loud.” He sits there for a moment and hears the thunderstorm outside. Thinking nothing of the loud crash that woke him up, he assumes it was the wind from the storm knocking against his window, he lays back down, rolls over to his side, and closes his eyes.

As he begins to doze off, there’s another loud crash from outside, Damian quickly opens his eyes, jumps out of bed, and walks across his room. While jumping out of bed, a bright flash appears outside for merely milliseconds without him noticing. Decides to take look out his window, Damian becomes frozen in place by the sight of a clear yard outside, and dry streets – but in total darkness.

“Wasn’t it just raining?” Damian says to himself. “I swear it was pissing up a storm ten seconds ago.” He walks across his room to turn the light on, but it’s seemingly dead. “Fucking hell,” he says as he makes another attempt. “I just got this damn bulb; it can’t be dead.” He assures himself so he stops himself from thinking he’s going insane while rummaging through his closet looking for his spare bulb. “Where the hell is it?” He questions to himself in frustration. “It’s gotta be here!”

While looking for a light bulb in pure darkness, Damian realizes his stupidity and reaches over to the side table to get his cellphone. “Fuck off,” he says as his phone is completely dead, “what the—” he doesn’t even bother wasting another breath to finish that sentence. Damian tosses his phone on his bed and begins to walk to the hall. “It’s so dark in here,” he thinks to himself as he slowly creeps his steps, making sure to not bump into anything along the way.

[CRASH!]

“AHH!” Damian shouts and jumps at the sudden sound and nearly falls. “Downstairs?” He quietly mutters to himself while trying to determine the location of the crashing. As Damian lives alone, this causes an eerie sense of intrusion for him – and without a phone, he can’t call anyone. “Fuck it, D. Man the hell up, man.” He says to himself as he grabs onto the baseball bat beside his bedroom door before walking into the hallway. “What the hell happened to the power?” he thinks to himself as he walks into a completely dark hallway.

As Damian is finding his way through the dark hall, another sudden noise echoes from downstairs. This one doesn’t startle him, but it does concern him. “A reverb?” He questions in confusion as he slowly creeps the hallway making his way to the stairs. “This is getting a little strange.” After about sixty-nine seconds of slow, creeping paces, Damian finally makes it to the stairs. Instead of going down, he leans and listens for sounds, or voices.

“What the hell?” A voice from downstairs says. “It’s gotta fucking be here!” The man downstairs begins to look through shelves, drawers, pantries, and anything else that has a door – except for the front door. In a clear panic, the man paces around for a few moments before he begins to walk up the stairs. Damian leans back to remain out of sight from whoever is coming up the stairs. He holds the bat tight and prepares to swing. The second he prepares; the entire house goes silent.

During this silene, Damian peeks at the stairs and the man isn’t there. “What?” Damain says to himself in sheer confusion. “How is that possible?” The lights suddenly come on for a second and thunder roars outside, causing the lights to flicker in an eerie pulsating rhythm. Damain, still scared almost shitless, checks his pulse to make sure he’s still alive, then feels his heartbeat.

[THMP THMMMP THMP… THMP… THMMMP THMMMP]

He walks downstairs, looks around – there’s nothing. “What the actual—“ his thought trails off as he looks toward his living room mirror and sees the reflection of somewhere else. “Ooohhkay?” He anxiously mutters. “That isn’t normal.” Still holding his baseball bat, he grips it tight and slowly walks toward the mirror. As he gets closer, the lights begin to flicker more aggressively, and the TV turns itself on to a channel full of glitchy image and distorted sound. “Wh—” Damian gasps as the TV turns on. He walks over, picks up the remote and turns it off – but it comes back on. A different glitched channel.

[CLICK]
Damian presses the power button once again.

It remains off this time, so he tosses the remote on the couch and stands in place, waiting to see if the TV turns back on. A few minutes pass and a cracking noise comes from the mirror. Damian quickly looks over but nothing’s there – not even the other reflection. “What?” he says before looking out the living room’s window. “Something’s wrong,” he continues to speak with his voice shutters while looking at the wet, empty street and houses with non-flickering lights. “Their power seems fine.”
He looks back at the mirror – it isn’t cracked – “What?” He mutters, “I can’t, I just can’t.”

[KNOCK, KNOCK]
There’s a knock at the door. “During this storm?” Damian thinks to himself.

While holding his bat as a caution, he goes to the door and looks through the window – there’s nobody there. “Oh, hell no,” he says as he opens the door and steps outside to see who knocked. “I’ll kick your—” he pauses to see nobody around his door, clear skies and the electric company working on a busted transformer. Confused, he looks around for a few more seconds before returning inside.

“Yo.” Says a man standing in Damian’s living room. Without realizing who it was at first, Damian gets startled and jumps. “Are you alright, man?” It’s Damian’s best friend Daniel. “Where’s the beer?” Damian, confused as usual responds to Daniel in an unusual tone, “Yeah, I’m good.” He says in an almost convincing manner. “What beer?” Daniel looks at him very concerningly. “The beer you said you were going to get, man. Where the fuck is it?”

Damian’s genuinely convinced he’s going insane but tries to remain calm in his current situation. “Is this actually Daniel?” He thinks to himself. “Or is this just another thing fucking with my head?” Damian remains standing in silence, deadpan staring Daniel in the face. “Bro?” Daniel says as Damian keeps staring. “It seems like it’s him,” Damian thinks, “but how did he get here? When did he get here?” Damian then finally speaks, “What beer?”

Daniel, seemingly pissed off that Damian literally repeated himself, “Are you serious, man?” He says, “I just told you.” Damian raises an eyebrow. “Bro, when did you get here?” He asks Daniel with slight aggression, like he does when he’s confused, concerned, or frightened. “You let me in, man.” Daniel says calmly while spotting Damian’s tone. “When?” asks Damian. Daniel raises an eyebrow. “Like five minutes ago.” He responds to Damian. “Well, maybe seven now since you came back without the beer.”

“I let you in?” Damian questions. Daniel with a look of annoyance, responds to Damian again, “Are you fucking with me right now?” He askes as Damian is looking at him like he’s seen a ghost. “Were you looking for something,” Damian begins to ask Daniel, “When I was upstairs?” Daniel raises an eyebrow yet again. “You haven’t been upstairs since I got here, man.” He says to Damian, “Are you sure you’re okay, man?” He stands there looking at Damian concerningly.

Damian throws his hands into the air in a panic, quickly glances at the mirror in the living room before looking back at Daniel. As he looks at the mirror, Daniel notices Damian’s focus change and instinctively looks at the mirror too before returning his vision onto Damian. “Is something wrong with the mirror?” Daniel asks. Putting on a false face of confidence, Damain replies to Daniel. “I’m fine,” he says. “So, you weren’t looking for something and freaking out that it wasn’t here?” Damian looks at the watch on Daniel’s wrist – it’s working. The time is currently 7:42pm.

Damian does the math in his head. “It’s been roughly three minutes since I walked back in the house,” he begins his mental calculations. “I apparently stepped outside to go get beer roughly five minutes prior. That’s a total of eight.” He squints his eyes with a mild headache as he continues his thought process. “However, I heard that knock while Dan wasn’t here and stepped outside much less than five minutes ago.” His headache worsens. “Why don’t I remember letting him in?”
